Host Your Own Mail Server — Clean IP, Reverse DNS

Run your own mail server on a cloud server in Frankfurt — with a dedicated, clean IPv4, free reverse DNS (PTR) and full root access. Full data sovereignty, GDPR-compliant , from €4.90/month. Honest up front: your own mail server means control — and ongoing upkeep.

Start a cloud server

Your own mail server gives you full control over email: no imposed mailbox limits, no third party scanning your messages, free choice of software like Mailcow, Mailu, Postfix/Dovecot or Mail-in-a-Box. Everything runs on your KVM server with root access — you decide on domains, mailboxes, aliases and spam filtering yourself.

A clean IP and reverse DNS — the basis for deliverability

For email delivery, IP reputation is everything. At Bthorio you get a dedicated IPv4 from our Frankfurt network and can set the reverse DNS (PTR) record freely — a prerequisite for major providers to accept your mail at all. Combined with correctly configured SPF, DKIM and DMARC, that lays the foundation for good delivery rates.

Why host a mail server in the EU?

Email often carries especially sensitive content. On a server in Frankfurt your messages and metadata stay in the EU, out of reach of the US CLOUD Act. For law firms, medical practices and companies with compliance requirements that's a real advantage — with a DPA on request. More under GDPR-compliant hosting .

Which server for a mail server?

For a handful of domains and mailboxes, the Starter plan (1 vCPU, 2 GB RAM) is plenty. Mailcow and other Docker-based stacks are happier on the Standard plan (2 vCPU, 8 GB RAM, 80 GB NVMe), because ClamAV, Rspamd and Solr like memory. Local NVMe keeps mailbox access and search indexes fast.

  • Starter (€4.90): a few mailboxes, lightweight stack (Postfix/Dovecot)
  • Standard (€12.90): Mailcow/Mailu with antivirus and spam filtering
  • Dedicated IPv4 included, free PTR record
  • 1 Gbit uplink with fair-use traffic , always-on DDoS protection

What you need to operate it

A reliable mail server pulls a few pieces together: your own domain with MX, SPF, DKIM and DMARC records, a valid TLS certificate (e.g. via Let's Encrypt) and monitoring that watches mail queues and blacklist status. Plan for regular updates of your mail software too — vulnerabilities in mail stacks are actively exploited. With full root and local NVMe you have the right foundation; the configuration stays in your hands, and our support helps with infrastructure questions like PTR records or port unblocking.
